Why 60 Minutes Isn't Always Enough: The Value Of The Extended Initial Consultation

It is understandable to wonder why an initial appointment sometimes lasts longer than a regular treatment. Many people arrive expecting that more hands-on time automatically means better results. In reality, the quality of a treatment often begins long before any massage or facial work starts.

An extended initial consultation creates the space to understand you as a whole person rather than focusing only on the day's symptoms. Whether you're living with persistent neck pain, recovering after pregnancy, managing stress-related tension or seeking support for your skin, lasting results depend on identifying contributing factors rather than simply addressing the area that feels uncomfortable.

During a comprehensive consultation, we discuss your health history, lifestyle habits, stress levels and more. This information helps build a clearer clinical picture and highlights any precautions, contraindications or patterns that may influence the treatment.

Postural and movement assessment is equally important as it provides valuable information that cannot always be gathered with a standard 60 minute appointment. Small findings often explain why symptoms keep returning and help shape a treatment plan that is specific to your needs.

The first or initial appointment is also an opportunity to set realistic expectations. Some concerns improve quickly, while others, particularly longstanding pain or chronic tension, benefit from a phased approach. Understanding this together helps create achievable goals and reduces the frustration that can come from expecting immediate change.

For facial therapy, the consultation extends beyond skin type alone. Careful consideration is pain to skincare routines, stress, hormonal influences, environmental factors and more, to ensure treatments are both safe and appropriate.

An extended consultation also allows time to answer your questions. Feeling informed and comfortable is an important part of the therapeutic relationship. Rather than feeling rushed, you have the opportunity to understand why certain techniques are recommended and how home care may support your progress between appointments.

Although it may seem like a longer initial consultation limits hands-on treatment time, the opposite is often true. Investing additional time at the beginning allows my treatments to become more focused, efficient and personalised in the weeks ahead.

Every person arrives into my clinic with a unique story. Taking the time to listen carefully, assess thoroughly and plan thoughtfully lays the foundation for care that is individual, evidence-informed and centred around your goals, not simply the time available on the treatment table.
